Obituary for Joseph Terrence Sampson

Joseph Terrence Sampson
Passed peacefully away at the Carmelite House, November 12, 2016, after a short, but fierce battle with lung cancer, in the presence of his loving family. Joseph Terrence Sampson, aged 67 years. Predeceased by his father Joe Sampson. Left to mourn his loss but celebrate his life, his wife of 41 years, Linda (Lacey), daughter Irene Cooper (Ken) Milton, On, daughter Terri Lynn Rice (Travis) Yellowknife, NWT, granddaughter Ilse Fewer (RJ Piper), grandson Noah Rice, his mother Stella Sampson, his brothers Roy (Irene), Dennis, his sisters Dot Barker(Bob), Diane Rice (Ron), Marilyn (Den Walsh), Joy Newman (Ron). His extended family included many beloved sisters and brothers in law, nieces and nephews, cousins but most especially Shirley and George Mitchell who have provided unending love and support and kept his spirits up in the 59 days of his illness. Many friends have shared his life but Boyce Sansom and his family, have been an enduring part of ours. We cannot put into words what your friendship means to us, we hope our hugs convey our gratitude.
Terry to his family, Joe to his friends, Dad was a gentle, kind, loving man. He had not a bad word to say about anyone. Easy going and well liked are often used to describe him. He was a very private man and avoided unnecessary words. Unless he was telling a good story, and then he was known to add a little here, take a little away there, to get you to laugh out loud. He loved the outdoors, spending countless hours at the cabin, being entertained by the sights and sounds of his beloved steady.
As a Dad, he encouraged his children and grandchildren to never stop doing what you love. Work hard, and be kind always. He always had patience to answer questions and show us how to do something. He wanted us to let drama roll away from us and love to make us stronger.
In his work life, he spent time working in Port aux Basques and Springdale with Avco Finance, as well as Grand Falls-Windsor at Newfoundland and Labrador Housing and St. John’s with Dept of Emergency Measures. He was well known for his sports participation in his younger days. Ball gloves, goalie pads, hockey sticks, lined the garage, course certificates and appreciation awards, decorated his home office.
As a member of the EMO Ice Demolition team, he made many friends around the province. He couldn’t stand the political wranglings around the disasters he responded too, he just wanted to get in and get the job done. It wasn’t about recognition or reward, he truly loved helping his fellow man.
Cancer diagnosis came into his world September 14, 2016 and it quickly devastated his body. Its swiftness took our breathes away, its deadliness met head on with fight and resolve. Quickly the battle was over and he was left to rest and hold his wife’s hand until the end. When asked if there was anything he would like, he responded, “a game of cards, a visit to my cabin and to see my grandchildren”…. Sadly, he was too sick to do any of these. He always wanted us to make the most of each day. He didn’t want anyone to see him when he became really ill. He wanted to be remembered as the man he was, not the shell cancer leaves you. Please cherish the memories you have of him.
Those we love remain with us
For love itself lives on
And cherished memories never fade
Because a loved ones gone
Those we love can never be
More than a thought apart
For as long as there is memory
They’ll always live on in our hearts.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jim Maidment of Central Funeral Homes.
