The family of the late Hubert Medley “Neal” Wells announce his peaceful passing at the Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Care Centre on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at the age of 95.

Neal was born in the former town of Grand Falls, November 5, 1919. He was the only son of Hubert Winfield and Clara Isabelle (Goudie) Wells. He graduated from Grand Falls Academy and started working at the Grand Falls Post Office. On May 1, 1940, he sailed with the 7th Royal Naval Draft from St. John’s to Chatham Barracks, England to aid with the Commonwealth’s defense of Great Britain against Germany in World War II. Dad served as an Ordinary Seaman and Able Seaman aboard the HMS Corfu (1940 – 1942) and HMS Persuer (1942 – 1944) where he sailed to Sierra Leone, South Africa, Australia, India and the USA.

In September of 1943, he met his future wife, Hilda Doris May Whent, who was serving with the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) and stationed in London, England. They met at a dance for service personnel. Neal and Hilda were married February 9, 1946 in Dagenham, Essex and returned to Newfoundland aboard the S.S. Lady Rodney on July 26, 1946. They were married for 64 years. Hilda passed away on August 3, 2010.

Neal was an active member in the community serving with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12, Commanding Officer of 67 RCSCC Windsor, Kinsmen, K40, 2, and the Anglican Church Sidesman Association . Neal and Hilda served as Sergeant at Arms with the Royal Canadian Legion.

Neal was predeceased by his loving wife Hilda Doris May Wells; mother and father, Winfield and Clara Wells; and sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Herbert Ludlow.

Leaving to mourn are son, David (Beulah); granddaughter, Michelle Glavine (Peter) and grandson, John; daughter, Pamela Sacrey (Calvin); granddaughter, Nell Flynn (Curtis); great-grandson, Gavin; grandson, Craig Sacrey (Cheyanne Jones); step great granddaughter; Brooklyn; great grand daughter, Brianna; grandson, Shane Sacrey (Melissa Jenkins); son, Clyde Wells (Agustine Soper); daughter, Maureen Kennedy (Gordon); grandsons, David, and Brian; nephews Gordon Ludlow (Phyllis), Bruce Ludlow, Neal Ludlow (Kathy); and special family friend, Joyce Nichols-Bailey.


Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made in his memory to the Anglican Church Paving Fund.
