He left Alberta as a young man to join the RCAF for two years before joining the RCMP. He was posted to Newfoundland in 1952, serving throughout his career in Corner Brook, Grand Falls-Windsor, Fogo Island, Springdale and Placentia. While stationed in Corner Brook, he met Gertrude Gamberg, whom he married in 1956. Together they raised five children.
Predeceased by parents Michael Angelo and Gertrude (Poulson), brothers Gordon and Patrick, and his loving wife Gertrude, who passed away in 1999.
Left with loving memories of a gentle and kind man; Sybil (Lacey), the angel he married in 2000, sons John (Gail) and grandchildren Robin and Andrew, Michael (Guylaine) and grandchildren Jason, Kim and Kelly, Robert (Cathy) and grandchildren Emma and Benjamin, Patrick (Carolyn) and grandchildren Mark, Katherine and Stephen, daughter Mary-Kathryn Stewart (Garry) and grandchildren Patrick, Kelly, Joseph and Emily, Sybil’s sons Lee Perkins (Debbie) and Andrew Perkins and his son Matthew, brothers Jack, Walter (Joan) and Edward (Barbara), and many friends and family that had he encountered during his life’s journey.
The family especially wishes to thank the staff at the Dr. Hugh Twomey Center who provided Dad with the highest degree of care and compassion. The constant high level of love and generosity provided by the nurses, doctors and health care providers to our father during the last months of his life ensured that this final phase was in comfort and peace.
Donations in memory of Howard L. Dornan may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
